One month already
Kate Salvatierra Peru,
It seems that time passes by like in a race and I realized that I hadn’t written enough.
We met Sara Schweingruber, who is the European Swiss delegate in the European Youth Forum. She explained us how important is for a young person to actively participate and be involved with current issues.
On Friday 14th, Rajib and I visited the Service Civil International (SCI) office in Bern. There Alexandra Strebel explained that SCI works as an umbrella organization which main activity is organizing international voluntary work camps. They have partners all over the world and have been working for over 90 years now; it’s one of the largest volunteer organizations in the world...

In one passed event we met Nicole Cornu, co-president of the SAJV, and she offers to show us her home town, so that weekend we went to visit Basel which has an interesting history and Nicole tell us all she knew about it, she was a great guide! And what I liked the most was going to the point where Germany, France and Switzerland meet. It was a great weekend.
My third and last week in Bern. On Monday 17th we had the presentations of our organizations. All the staff members were there to listen to us. Rajib explained how his organization works with young people, its activities and more. And I talked about mine: Native of Peru. I explained we’re a volunteer organization that gives children a complementary non-formal education through workshops. It went quite well. After the presentations we were asked to work with Intramundo, a SAJV partner organization, in the organization of the event Re:connaissances.
There’s a great interest for the ‘Arab Spring’ here in Switzerland. I say this because in many of the events we attended the subject was brought up. We attended to a round table about the role of young people in the ‘Arab Spring’ and to the Annual Conference of Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Switzerland Titled: ‘Uprisings in the Arab world: between hope and fears‘. It was held in Bern and very important people attended, like the President of the Confederation, Micheline Calmy-Rey and the Egyptian writer Nawal El Sadawi, who gave a talk about creativity and revolution her speech impressed us all, she is in my opinion a remarkable woman. Many participants came to the conference where the courage of young people was pointed out, youngsters who lived the revolution gave their testimonies, the conflict between Israel and Palestine was discussed and the role of the UE, US and Switzerland in the Arab Spring, how they should respond.
We visited Young Caritas office in Luzern, they help young people with ideas to implement projects or create groups, kind of counseling, and also work in a variety of fields – all of them related to young people - like fair trade among others.
I left Bern on Friday 21st to attend to the GIMUN conference: The UN in our day to day. And I will be staying in Geneva for one month, doing the second part of my traineeship in ATD Quart Monde.
The day before Olivier organized something for me and Rajib, we tried ‘fondue‘– and I really liked it - and have a nice time together with Celine and Nicole.
Once in Geneva it was pretty difficult to find the place where I was supposed to stay, it’s far apart at the end of a forest. It’s not really a hostel but a welcome house for delegates full of people from different countries, it’s a nice place.
The weather is still good, not that cold and sunny sometimes.
I will write soon.
